SPRING FORWARD!

Writer: Brian 'Bunny' BatistaBrian 'Bunny' Batista

It's that time of year again when the spinning of this earth makes us change our clocks in North America. This newsletter is mostly Painting and portrait related stuff.

Just a reminder to change your clocks and to not be late for your sessions this week as we will not be accepting "Daylight savings" as an excuse for lateness.

In the last issue I mentioned some classes start this week and next. Classes have been filling up so ensure that you have registered online so I know to have a spot and the necessary equipment set up before you arrive to your first class. If you are already registered or have told Bunny you are coming, please bring all your stuff, paint, blank canvases and a desire to learn new things. Its hard to teach painting if you don't have supplies on the first day. But don't go buy new things or waste money, lets use up what you have laying around first.

At the end of the last issue I also alluded to some new things coming up with the talented ladies of Art, 2 special one day events coming up have a look:

Bobbi Dunlop will be presenting a Masterclass in April, we are limiting the class size so it is recommended to sign up as soon as possible. More info on the "buy Now" button below.

The portrait sessions are still going strong, it would be nice to see more painters impress these models we have booked in.

The above artist is Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, 'Self Portrait in a Straw Hat', 1782. Martinho Isidro Correia sent a post that may be of interest, from Le Brun's book "advice on the painting of Portraits" on his instagram here.

After seeing we have a new portrait evening, Emily Hughes who is studying abroad in Switzerland/Japan shared this James Gurney link as it may be useful in that relates to talking to the models during portrait painting. It may be an interesting perspective for you.

"Cleanliness is next to godliness"

The constant upkeep of the studio floors is one of my personal pet peeves. Its just one of those unglamorous things I have to keep up constantly. I know its a studio and its going to get filthy.

But I notice as it gets dirty, as it does.... one thing leads to another and people stop caring about making a mess and it begins to pile up. I see pencil shavings being left on the floor when I sweep than should be put into the garbage. The real tell is when I mop up spilled coffee and thats the only clean spot in a patch of Jackson Pollock Lol.

Since I'm really only one fella barely holding back the chaos of running things and I really cant afford cleaners to come in.....I find myself sweeping and mopping constantly instead of making art. I'm wishing I could turn into a witch, hop on the broom and get outta dodge.

So the great news is when you come in next....

I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the floors like when I first opened. Even Steel has agreed to drive up from Claresholm and help me buff the floors. My hero!

I'm very excited to be spending the extra hours of daylight savings this Sunday getting things nice and clean again. It adds up quick after years of art creation. Maybe it'll be so clean we can so somersaults and the models feet wont turn black when they get off the stand.

Fingers crossed.

One more thing, I was so blessed and fortunate to be asked to be part of the Stampede Youth Poster competition to mentor the artist in developing their ideas for their pieces. I stayed u late Thursday night putting together a half hour slide presentation. I started going through old photos from high school to show them what I was making at their age. I admit my work was terrible which goes to show you you can improve. I'll be making a little youtube video on my personal channel that I hope entertains you, stay tuned.
