The studio will be closed April 11 & 12th for the Rozsa Foundation RAFT Program weekend so there is no No TGIF session Friday morning.
We will be closed from Good Friday April 18 and Easter Monday April 21st but Bobbi's Workshop will run on the 19th.
There are no figure sessions on the Friday April 18, Nor RISE & DRAW, Directed studies, private classes or Long Pose on Monday the 21st.
Parents have been asking, so we got the summer camps listed and on the website and though times are getting expensive and the cost of art supplies has drastically risen. We are keeping the camps the same price as last year, ALL ART MATERIALS INCLUDED!
The Sacred Arts Guild of Alberta (SAGA) hosted a class on making and painting Tempera paint with Alla Kireyeva. After the class, we cleaned the egg off our faces and visited the ABVM UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH where the artist Anton Yavny gave a talk about the three dozen yolks he used each day, taking six years to finish the project. It is breathtaking and such a surprise that we have such a place in Calgary. Elena Bushan and I got to meet the artist and get some questions answered.
We are planning on hosting another Tempera painting class May 24 from 10 -2 if it interests you.
Been so proud of some of the private students here. Some come every week weekly and lately we have been focusing on the classical art fundamentals. Some students are learning sight size drawing, others charcoal and grisaille painting and one has been making great progress on his first Master copy of Jacques-Louis David's Patroclus from 1780. I want to highlight that this process began with the proper preparing and stretching of the canvas and is continuing through all the steps to doing this piece from beginning to end to build a solid foundation step by step. He is photographing and documenting his progress on his weekly blog you can check it out below.
HELLO ART SHOW at the Hemmingway room
Bunny was working with all his free time to create a piece for the show titled "teeth". There were 44 other artists showing, some were students/participants from the atelier including Ashla, Dionna, Elena, Lexi, Michelle, and Teika. It was a two day whirlwind of colour and teeth. The studio Easels went out to help the display and Bunny didn't take enough pictures to share how great it really was but below is a glimpse if you don't follow the story feeds on instagram or FB.
FINDING JOY
The Haus of SpanicArts
131 6 Ave. S.W. Calgary
Weekdays: 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Weekends: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
SpanicArts will be closed on Monday, March 31st.
Jennifer was a student from when the Atelier first opened. I call her the "Wild horse" of the studio, those who know her understand why. She knows no bounds and gallops off leaving a cloud of coloured material in her wake. She posted this entire show on her own and filled this really huge space with tons of examples of her visions. I managed to hop down toe Jennifer's show between commission work and the opening of the Hello Art show and some mural painting. The exhibition is free and goes on until and might be worth checking out if you can get there during gallery hours.
STUDENT SHOW!!!
There are dates set! I just paid for the 4th floor Gallery space at cSPACE outside the studio for the month of September (2-29) to host the second annual student show. This is your chance to exhibit something for all to see.
I will be coming out with hanging requirements and outlines so you will have from now until the end of summer to create a piece from your heart to show off what you've learned at the Atelier. The subject and materials are of your choice. More info to come.
I'll make a presentation or a video with all that stuff, speaking of which I'm planning another rant but maybe you didn't check out the last one on my own personal youtube channel. Maybe you'll learn something new or something you didn't know about how we got here so far.
See you after the dust settles...
