GRISAILLE Painting foundations

For oil and acrylic painters of all skill levels.
Surface and paint provided, you bring the rest.
 
If you have never done a grisaille study, you ought to.
 
This one day intensive should sharpen your understanding of painting form through value.Learning to properly, see make and paint value is the utmost important skill for any representational artist.  This course picks up where drawing and charcoal leave off adding the nuances of the challenges presented by wet media. You will learn how to properly parse out the value scale in wet media.
 
The class will start with a lecture and slideshow of examples of various grisaille artworks. We will discuss ways of seeing and transferring to the panel and tools to help you move more quickly in understanding the dark to light mixing and application of paint. We will prepare surfaces then get straight to work preparing "colour string" for grisaille painting. You will focus on how to how to move about the palette effectively to paint more efficiently using a palette knife.
 
You are welcome to bring your own paints we will only be using Raw umber and white.  Browns and blues would be the next best thing and or bought blacks like Ivory black.
 
*It is recommended that all students have a regular sized binder or notebook of some sorts to keep hand outs and example and experiments of their work. You can buy canvas sheets or oil paper  that can be hole punched and added to the binder, or inexpensive canvas panels for your work to keep as reference in your studio.
