*No class Family Day Feb. 17
This is a 6 week intensive Course that will focus solely on the introduction of the Frank Reilly method of interpreting the human figure. It is a method that has a long and distinct lineage from the golden age of illustration and is still widely practiced to this day.
The Reilly method is a powerful and efficient method of interpreting the figure that allows the Artist to create figures with clarity, design, and beauty in arguably the most important beginning stage of a drawing; the gesture.
Come and learn the importance of this stage of a drawing the human figure, how to preserve your gesture and how to build key anatomical structures over top of it. Learn to Exaggerate and define the most important elements of a pose all while telling a story!
Each class will contain a lecture and demonstration by the instructor followed by The students applying the information from supplied reference or a live model.
Week 1 - What is the Reilly method? Why is it unique and what are its benefits? How it works, and major Rhythm’s and concepts. Demo on how to apply the main rhythm’s of the torso. Simplified structure of the torso.
Week 2 - Introduction to The Rhythm’s of the arms and legs and how to apply them in varying situations. Simplified structure of the arms and legs.
Week 3 - Putting it all together part 1: utilizing the Rhythms in a cohesive manner, and additional Rhythm’s that create solidarity and unity through the major Anatomical structures of the Figures “side to side”.
Week 4 - Applying structure over-top of you gesture; the most important structural landmarks and how to effectively simplify them for successful communication. Anatomical differences between male and female and useful Design tips (do’s and don’ts) for both.
Week 5 - An in depth look at how to approach different kinds of poses (stretched, compressed, active, reclining, seated, etc) and best approach for successful interpretation and strong storytelling. We will discuss the differences and benefits of utilizing either Rhythms (Gesture) or use of Structure (Mannequinization) in each situation.
Week 6 - Putting it all together part 2 : How to work under time constraints utilizing a live model. Process for consistent results and best practices. Apply what we have learnt under real world circumstances.
